The Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poznań is considered one of the most prestigious competitions of its kind. It is held only every five years, which gives it an air of exclusivity that can be compared to the equally prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The first Henryk Wieniawski Competition was held in 1935 in Warsaw on the 100th anniversary of this distinguished Polish violin virtuoso and composer. The second competition was not held until seventeen years later, and took place in Poznań, where it has been held at regular intervals ever since. The competition is a showcase for young violin talents, such as David and Igor Oistrakh. In 2022, the jury of eleven distinguished members awarded first prize to the twenty-year-old Japanese violinist Hina Maeda, who studies at the Tokyo College of Music and already boasts victories at the Tokyo Music Competition and the Schöntal Monastery International Violin Competition. Describing Hina Maeda’s playing, violinist and critic Heather Kurzbauer wrote that she is sincere and fully committed to the message of the composer whose music she performs. We will host this promising young musician in our Chamber Cycle as part of her European tour.
