Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Clarinet Quintet in A major, KV 581

The young Italian clarinettist Kevin Spagnolo is one of the most exciting talents we have hosted on our stage. We still recall his performance in 2022, when he replaced the ill Martin Fröst on tour with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and unexpectedly gave us a genuinely stellar evening.

Since winning the prestigious international music competition in Geneva, Spagnolo has made rapid inroads into the international concert scene and regularly performs as a soloist with the most renowned partners. He convinces audiences with the perilous ease of his mastery of the clarinet, and impresses with his spontaneity and freedom. He explains his musical credo as follows: “Music is one of the most perfect ways to find the child within you; music expresses vulnerability and emotions, and derives pleasure from what is heard and seen, just like a child. My goal is to rediscover classical music by taking risks and seeking the extreme limits of the instrument’s capabilities, but also by analysing and understanding the composer’s intention down to the smallest details. When playing, all of this effort must function as instinct and manifest itself as spontaneously as possible.”

On this occasion, we will admire Kevin Spagnolo as a chamber musician with distinguished partners, the members of the Szymanowski String Quartet. With its evocative performances, this refreshed and rejuvenated Polish-Ukrainian ensemble builds upon the successes of its enviable twenty-five-year tradition. The quartet’s perfect technical execution and expressive internalised interpretation offers a perfect counterweight to their young fellow virtuoso.
