At the second concert of the Chamber Cycle, we will entrust the stage to an international ensemble of masters of chamber music, who will come together to perform a very special programme. The driving force of this ensemble is Boštjan Lipovšek, one of Slovenia’s most successful instrumentalists. He explains that the performance will reunite musicians “who meet at various international festivals or otherwise participate in a range of chamber formations, while the selected music will lead us to a common point, that is, to the common geographical and cultural connection of our region, and to a time that is actually not far in the past”.

We will have an opportunity hear rarely performed but extremely inventive, expressive and sonically opulent works of Central European late Romanticism. After the First World War, Franz Schreker was regarded as the greatest composer of the German-speaking world after Richard Wagner, and he surpassed Richard Strauss in the number of performances of his operas. When the National Socialists came to power, however, his works were blacklisted as “degenerate art”. A similar fate befell Alexander Zemlinsky, who was also a master of opera as well as a creator of outstanding symphonic works. Ernst von Dohnányi fared slightly better. He resided in Hungary during the war and then, like many of his colleagues, continued his career in America.

The musicians will embark on their interpretive challenge under the guidance of the distinguished Philip Zuckerman. In an evening that includes appearances by the Croatian cellist Monika Leskovar and Maximilian Martin, who is the principal clarinettist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, we can expect a genuine celebration of chamber music making.
