Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: String Quartet No. 21 in D major, KV 575
Alfred Schnittke: String Quartet, No. 3
***
Edvard Grieg: String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27

Ebony, ébène in French, is part of a string instrument, the black backbone of this noble instrument. Its various parts are connected into a harmonious body that inspires the musicians of the world-renowned French quartet, who feel connected in a common spirit, as if they were the parts of a single musical instrument. There are many critics who regard the Ébène Quartet as the best string quartet in the world. It convinces listeners with its rich palette of sonic hues, ranging from the most intimate execution to almost aggressive interventions. If we add to this the indescribable inner connection of the musicians, which enables them to organically merge interpretations, it is hardly surprising that their music making always creates a strong impression.

The remarkable success of the quartet was crowned by a major victory at the ARD competition in 2004, followed by triumphant performances at several other important competitions. The quartet has won important international awards in the field of classical music, such as the Gramophone Award, the BBC Music Magazine Award and the MIDEM Classical Award. With a unique flexibility that enables them to “easily morph into a jazz band” (New York Times), the musicians tackle a wide variety of music, leaving their distinctive mark on each genre.

We will be left in no doubt as to the capabilities of this quartet after the varied programme of their Maribor concert, in which the musicians will explore the points of contact between the diverse musical worlds of W. A. Mozart, A. Schnittke and E. Grieg.
