The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra is one of the most internationally renowned Hungarian orchestras. In 2023, it celebrates its 60th anniversary, which provides an opportunity to reflect on the glittering heights of the past and focus on a present full of new creative impulses. The orchestra has undergone a renaissance in recent years, since the artistic leadership was taken over by the celebrated Hungarian cellist and conductor István Várdai, who supplements the orchestra’s perfect interpretations and characteristic string sonority with new artistic and socially committed concepts.

Since we last heard the orchestra in Maribor in 2014, it has enjoyed numerous successes at the most prestigious venues in Europe (Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, Wiener Musikverein in Vienna, the festivals in Macklenburg-Vorpommern and Gstaad) and collaborated with leading soloists from the international music scene. The achievements of recent years have been crowned by a CD released by the renowned label Deutsche Grammophon.

The concert in Maribor will be dedicated to the outstanding works of Hungarian music as well to the centenary of one of the most original and popular composers of the twentieth century, György Ligeti. Extraordinary brilliance will be provided by Pierre-Laurent Aimard, one of the most distinguished pianists of our time and a musician who, in addition to the Classical or Romantic repertoire, also devotes himself to the very best contemporary music for his instrument. Aimard worked closely with Ligeti and recorded the composer’s entire oeuvre for piano. We will hear the French interpreter perform Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto, which is a surprisingly light and airy work for this composer, while at the same time being highly virtuosic.
