Jure Pukl, winner of the Prešeren Fund Prize (2015), probably needs no special introduction. After studying in Vienna, Graz and The Hague, he found his career path mainly in New York, where he won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and continued his studies with masters such as Joe Lovano and George Garzone. He soon became one of the most prominent saxophonists on the scene there, and it is no surprise that he has only recently returned to Slovenia.
Few Slovenian musicians can boast a dozen albums and collaborations with such big names as Jure Pukl. He creates a unique genre of contemporary jazz and impressionistic contemporary music, which he performs with great skill and love, emphasising the interplay between the members of his groups. It would be hard to find a group more cohesive than the "Anorok" quartet, as all members communicate with each other almost telepathically.
Bassist Joe Sanders has played in bands with artists such as Christian Scott, Ambrose Akinmusire, Theo Croker, Gerald Clayton and even the legendary Charles Lloyd. Drummer Nasheet Waits is considered one of the key percussionists of our time, working with the likes of Andrew Hill, Christian McBride, David Murray, Avishai Cohen, and most notably in Jason Moran & The Bandwagon. Trumpeter Philip Dizack has earned the title of "one of the twenty-five trumpeters of the future" by Downbeat magazine.
In Maribor, the band will present their new album Melt, which was released in October 2023 and is a highlight of the current New York scene. Certanly a gig not to be missed!
