Jazz Exchange 2023: Pantaloons + Tygroo

As a part of the international Jazz Exchange project, we're excited to introduce two young bands from Slovenia and the Czech Republic, which are currently at the forefront of brass band music!

The performance by the Slovenian Pantaloons and the Czech band Tygroo will be a blend of sounds where the distinguished tradition of Balkan and New Orleans brass bands is intricately woven with electronics and the new wave of the London jazz scene, incorporating elements of funk, breakbeat, and dubstep.

Pantaloons is one of those bands that are able to get even the most indifferent audience on their feet, ensuring a great time for all. The group has been active since 2016, and their original music has found its place in electronic dance music, seasoned with breezy rhythms of jazz, funk, breakbeat, dubstep, and more. After numerous domestic and international performances, they released their first album entitled Zbounce in 2022 and also collaborated with Mladinsko Theatre to create a youth theatre production called Scattered Stories. In addition to many concerts in Slovenia, they have also performed at festivals in Serbia, Macedonia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

Tygroo is a Czech drum'n'brass/balkan/hip-hop group that blends various traditional and contemporary music genres, such as klezmer, Balkan music, funk, hip-hop, disco, dubstep, and electronica, all seasoned with a generous dose of inventiveness and creativity. When they play on drums and wind instruments (and occasionally the accordion), they sound remarkably unique, fresh, vibrant and fiery, reminiscent of the sounds of Odessa or the Guča festival, and sometimes echoing the vibes of New Orleans or the New York subway.
