Ensemble Modern is regarded as one of the most committed ensembles for the performance of contemporary music. Comprising musicians who are curious, brave, uncompromising and energetic in following their path, the ensemble is a sounding board of the new, always striving for perfection in conveying the composer’s message. Ensemble Modern is an indispensable actor on the international music scene when it comes to the high quality presentation of new music of a wide variety of styles and sonic conceptions. When the ensemble was founded in Frankfurt in 1980, it set itself the goal of discovering everything new in music and the related arts. It has collaborated with most of the great composers of our time, including John Adams, Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, Mauricio Kagel, György Kurtág, György Ligeti, Steve Reich, Wolfgang Rihm, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Frank Zappa, as well as Slovenia’s own Vinko Globokar and Vito Žuraj.
We are proud to host Ensemble Modern in association with the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023, where Slovenia is the guest of honour. The ensemble, joined by outstanding Maribor-born soprano Nika Gorič, is preparing a concert programme presenting some of the leading Slovenian composers and poets for performances in Germany and Slovenia. Especially for this occasion, Matej Bonin has created music for Ana Pepelnik’s poetry collection Techno. Vito Žuraj wrote the composition The Book of Bodies based on the eponymous poetry collection by Aleš Šteger, and Nina Šenk’s music for the film Stump the Guesser is just as convincing on the concert stage. The works by Petra Strahovnik and Vinko Globokar are purely instrumental. Q. M. (Quantum Mechanics) by Petra Strahovnik deals with the composer’s interest in quantum mechanics, which has revealed a world full of mysteries, while the performance of Vinko Globokar’s composition will be dedicated to Ensemble Modern’s many years of fruitful collaboration with this penetrating European modernist.
